The brief was a garden for entertaining: a large dining terrace off the back of the house, somewhere to sit round a fire in the evening, and low-maintenance green space. We laid grey sandstone in a random pattern across the main terrace and into the courtyard at the heart of the building, and cut a sunken square into the terrace for the fire pit, lined in timber with built-in bench seating on three sides.
Artificial lawn runs from the terrace to the boundary for the loungers, new close-board fencing encloses the garden with a built-in log store, and the planted bed beneath the trees was kept and topped up so the garden has a soft edge against the woodland.
